New
Patients
Poplars
surgery normally accepts patients under Health Service arrangements
within most of the Erdington area and parts of Boldmere and
Wylde Green. If in doubt, please ask one of the receptionists.
When registering with the practice you may wish to express a
preference of GP whom you would like to see. Please inform the
receptionist and the name of the GP will be added to your records.
Please bear in mind that it is not always possible to see the
GP of your choice on the day of your choice. Please read on
for information on the appointment system.
The
full medical records of new patients often take some time to
arrive. The practice believes it is important for all new patients
to have a ‘new patient screening’ with our Practice
Nurse. This takes around 15 minutes and includes medical and
family history, blood pressure check, urine examination and
lifestyle screening.
Child Health
The
majority of our doctors are approved for providing child health
surveillance. This programme runs from birth to age five years.
The health visitors carry out most check-ups.
Maternity
All
the doctors provide maternity services. Pregnancy tests are
available.
Contraception
All
the doctors provide contraceptive services. Young women under
the age of 16 years asking for contraception advice can be assured
that their consultation will be completely confidential.
Travel/holiday
vaccinations
Anyone
planning holidays abroad should check with the practice nurse
2-3 months before they plan to travel, so that proper schedules
can be obtained. The Travel clinic is held on a Friday evening.
The
surgery is registered with the Department of Health as a Yellow
Fever Vaccination Centre. This facility is open to the general
public as well as to the patients of Poplars.
Blood Pressure and Diabetes
All
patients over 35 years of age are advised to have blood pressure
and urine checks regularly.
Cervical
Smears
Women aged 25 to 50 years are recalled every 3 years. Women
aged 50 to 64 are recalled every 5 years. Women under 25 years do not need smears.
